The 2024 PEAK I Spring Meeting will be at the Valley Forge Casino Resort from April 4-7, 2024. PEAK Track I is one of two PAGD Mastertracks, and keeps its meeting intentionally smaller for those inclined to learn in a more intimate setting.

Friday, April 5

Oral Cancer and Oral Potentially Malignant Disease - Screening and Management Strategies by Dr. Tom Sollecito

This lecture will review common oral mucosal diseases including oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disease (OPMD) that maybe encountered in daily practice. We will review risk factors for oral cancer and OPMD. The lecture will also review the complexities in the detection and diagnosis of oral potentially malignant disease and review current surgical and non-surgical treatment strategies in treating those diseases. Finally, this course also will provide guidance on the dental evaluation prior to anticipated cancer treatment and also describe the dental management of the oral cancer patient including long-term follow-up.  

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: 

  • Evaluate the oral cavity and diagnose oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disease.
  • Understand risk factors and epidemiology for oral cancer/oral potentially malignant disease.
  • Discuss the current rise of HPV and its impact on the prognosis and        management of oropharyngeal cancer. 
  • Discuss surgical and non-surgical treatment strategies of oral cancer/oral potentially malignant disease.
  • Manage appropriate pre cancer treatment referrals.
  • Describe the management and long term follow up of the oral cancer patient.

Establish Your Foundation: Surgical Extractions with Simultaneous Bone Grafting by Dr. Sam Shamardi

Understanding the radical transformation an extraction site undergoes upon removal of a tooth is essential for advancing your restorative outcomes. This course will provide a foundation in understanding how to surgically remove teeth atraumatically to minimize bone loss while learning the vital role biomaterials play in your future implant and/or prosthetic therapy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Assess how to counter the significant functional and esthetic challenges tooth removal creates
  • Establish an atraumatic technique for surgical extractions
  • Identify when to utilize specific bone and membrane materials to maximize results

Peri-Implantitis: A Clinician's Guide to Early Intervention by Dr. Sam Shamardi 

As implant therapy continues to grow exponentially, so do its corresponding complications. Peri-implantitis is the most common, resulting in significant challenges and long-term issues which if untreated can lead to implant failure. This course will take a closer look at what makes peri-implantitis such a complex problem to manage and how to minimize risk using various diagnostic and clinical markers along with saliva testing.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define diagnostic criteria for peri-implantitis and peri-mucositis
  • Recognize clinical and radiographic signs of implant complications
  • Discuss various clinical treatment options to minimize risks and maintain implants for the long term
